November 9, 2008 marks the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the "Night of Broken Glass." According to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, at least 91 Jews were killed during the nights of November 9-10, 1938; 30,000 German Jews and 8,000 Austrian Jews were pulled from their homes and businesses and deported to concentration camps, an estimated 1,400 synagogues were demolished and burned, and more than 7,000 Jewish shops and homes were ransacked. The 70th anniversary will be an occasion for remembrances, retrospectives, seminars and concerts in cities around the world. The Generations of the Shoah International newsletter lists many commemorative events in the United States, or you may check local listings for an observance in your community. Â Â
